Is There Dog Food for Picky Eaters?

Dogs! Usually considered to be great eaters - they’ll eat table scraps, dog food, and pretty much anything you give them. Meat or vegetables, it doesn’t matter to them. But then one day - your dog suddenly starts disliking the food you give them. They become or are fussy eaters, and this sudden change in behavior can be really worrying. But don’t fret, there’s a solution, and there’s also dog food for picky eaters like yours.

What causes dogs to become picky eaters?

Pretty much all dogs can become picky eaters. This can be temporary or permanent, and it can be caused by factors like illness, injury, loss of taste or smell, or age. Other times, dogs can become picky eaters because there’s too much variety in their diet. When we feed our dogs a lot of treats, table scraps, or various flavors and brands of dog food, it can cause them to become picky eaters. Essentially, they’ll prefer this kind of food more and they’re waiting for us to give it to them.

What do I do?

It’s important to consult a vet to know if the dog’s picky eating is because of an underlying condition or disease. Although sometimes, it could be just them coming to dislike what you give them. If it really is just them being picky eaters, try not to feed them human food. This is one of the main causes as to why they become picky eaters, and also human food won’t be able to give them the nutrition that they actually need. If they’re not eating their kibble, it might be a good time to change their dog food from dry to wet and vice versa or to switch to another brand, flavor, or kind.

If you’re concerned that they’re not getting enough calories per day, and you can’t switch your kind or brand of dog food yet, you could add some human food to your dog’s food that would encourage them to eat it more, like chicken or vegetable broth with no salt, or fresh vegetables high in water like broccoli. However, do not overfeed your dog to compensate for the times that they don’t eat - this could cause weight gain and obesity. Note that wild canines don’t necessarily eat 2 to 3 meals a day, or even daily. Some dogs just eat when they feel like it.
